Industrial Archaeology
Not ancient ruins, but modern cathedrals never consecrated: Sicilcalce, for the production of construction lime; Italkali in Casteltermini, for potassium salts; the former Cuffaro Mill in Bagheria; the skeleton of the AFEM steelworks in Campofelice di Roccella, where a serious work accident caused three victims in 1982; and the most emblematic case, the former Chimica del Mediterraneo, popularly renamed "Comica del Mediterraneo" - the Comedy of the Mediterranean - because it was built but never became operational.
The project is an investigation into the plans envisaged for industrial development in Southern Italy. Plans imposed from above on a territory that never had an industrial vocation nor the strength to sustain it.
The architecture is photographed frontally, at close range, with the precision of the view camera. The sky is always clear, weeds are in the foreground, the structures are empty.
A frontal inventory, without nostalgia or rhetoric, of archaeologies of the future that are already past.
